So, so cold
Jan. 7th, 2005 04:05 pmThere are a couple of things I had blissfully forgotten about being out in below zero temperatures.
*Pure joy of feeling the snot freeze in your nose.
*Lovely feeling of eyelashes freezing together as your eyes water from the blisteringly freezing wind.
*How incredibly hard things get. I.e. The usually soft leather seats in my parents' car feeling like cement benches. My jacket making really loud crackling sounds.
*The feeling of your skin dying even though it's buried under three %$#@& layers of clothing (sensitive skin sucks!).

So, so old
Jan. 7th, 2005 04:17 pmWhen I was a kid we opened our Christmas presents almost without fail on Christmas Eve. I have no problem admitting patience was not one of our priorities. We'd go to the early Christmas Eve mass (6:00 pm) and charge home to open presents.
The past few years, however, it seems our present opening has gotten later. This year we opened Christmas day around 5:00 pm! Which isn't even as bad as last year when we did it Christmas night!! It's a sure sign that I've gotten old when I don't even care when I open my presents.

Planes, trains, and automobiles
Jan. 7th, 2005 04:32 pmI feel like I took every form of transportation known to modern Americans on my little vacation. I think I learned several useful things.
Never again will I book a flight with a measly 25 minute layover. While it was the best layover of my life - I landed got off my plane and walked to and boarded my connecting flight, no time in between any of those - I don't ever want to loose so much sleep worrying over a stupid connection ever again. I probably would have lost less sleep just getting up early to take the crack of dawn flight.
Traveling by train with somebody else IS more fun than traveling by train alone. Yep, those 24 and a half hours on the train flew right by. I think I even managed to sleep on the train for the first time ever. All thanks to my mom. That's right. My mom helped make the trip more pleasant. Who knew?
Chicago traffic scares me. No, not the highways, the downtown traffic. I think this is residual paranoia left over from my accident last summer. But I've never been so happy to play passenger.
Nice airports can be located in the crappiest of neighborhoods. Midway airport was surprisingly nice for an airport located on the south side of Chicago (I assume that it's included in the "south side").
I need about three months before I'm ready to travel again. But, alas, I have new things to learn because I'll be off to Boston next Friday. Hopefully I'll only learn good things.
