California's "hands free" law went into effect yesterday. Today my bus driver was yapping on his cellphone... using his hand to hold it to his head. Now I need to do research to see if bus drivers, like out of state truck drivers, are exempt. I'm just happy I can still eat hamburgers while driving.

ETA: Upon a minuscule amount of research, I'm not entirely sure out of state truck drivers are exempt from the law. Apparently, truckers can use some sort of communication technology the rest of us can't. *shrugs* But I wasn't so interested that I looked very deep into that. I just wanted to be extra clear that out of state drivers ARE expected to follow the "hands free" law. Ha! Remember that visiting Oregonians!

That's what I wish I could report about my recent visit to the wretched city of Anaheim, but, alas, I'm not that lucky. Anaheim blows goat chunks in the most horrible of ways - it's filled with chain restaurants, everything is overpriced to sock it to the tourists, it's sorely lacking in cultural and entertainment opportunities (outside the god-awful Disney-plex of pain), and it's packed with grumpy little kids and shell-shocked parents.  Ahhhhhhh! What a bland suburban nightmare.

Ok, now that I have that off my chest I will admit that there was one decent thing about Anaheim, the air - smoggy as it was  - was, indeed, clearer than Sacramento's. Yay!  And I did manage to find some amusement in the form of wacky signage as you can see here. I was also lucky enough to capture this photo at the local mega church. The mega church, known as the Crystal Cathedral, was just about the only other "tourist" site in Anaheim. I didn't partake of the gift shop, cafe or tour, but I did walk on the grounds "praying" all the while that I wouldn't be struck by lightning. Heh. Just kidding, you know I don't pray. It's a massively huge, shiny church (out of my worst nightmares where church seemingly = commerce) with towers so high they have flashy lights to warn off airplanes. Yes, I was reduced to wandering church grounds for entertainment. *sob*

Anyway, the conference itself wasn't too bad. I went to some decent meetings, I felt like a slacker librarian (there be no librarian 2.0 here), I socialized with old friends (yay!), encountered a few enemies (hiss! Just kidding, I don't really think I have any enemies. But I did have to snatch my Starbucks coffee out of the clueless hands of an idiot librarian), avoided the vendors like the plague, and generally found everything to be pretty walkable (despite the fact that $#@! palm trees provide utter crap for shade). The committee chair said she'd talk to the committee appointment person and see if she could talk her into putting me back on the committee. I smiled, said thanks!, and then desperately started hoping she will drop that ball. I don't know that I'm ready to go to another ALA until it's going to be in New York City in a couple years. Mmmm, now that sounds like FUN!!
